In December, I concluded my first four year term as Sheriff of Washington County. As I reflect on this journey, I have great admiration and respect for all the members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. We have accomplished countless improvements and achievements during this time. This has been an extreme honor and privilege to serve the citizens of our wonderful county.
Once again, in 2010, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office held the highest clearance rate of crimes solved in the entire State of Maine. This superb accomplishment is credited to the outstanding dedication, hard work and knowledge of the patrol division of our agency. In recognizing this feat, I must also commend the citizens of Washington County for their complete cooperation and support. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has continued to educate and train its officers to a standard commendable by other agencies within the State of Maine. These efforts on the part of all individuals continue to make our county a safer and healthier place to live and raise our children.
Our entire county, state and country continue to deal with the declining economy and in some cases financial devastation. These fiscal challenges have tasked the administration to seek practical ways to continue services without placing more of a financial burden on the taxpayers. Some of these efforts included applying for and being awarded several grants. These awards provided financial assistance, along with allowing us to purchase valuable equipment. We have also continued to work closely with other agencies to streamline services and draw upon mutual resources in a cost saving effort.
In closing, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the citizens of Washington County for their continued faith, trust and support. It has been a privilege to serve as your Sheriff for the last four years and I am honored that you have allowed me to continue in that capacity.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sheriff Donald G. Smith
